Work has
started on a £5.2 million student accommodation
development in Lincoln which will provide housing
for almost 300 students in the city centre.
The
development will be on a 3/4 acre site at Park
Street formerly occupied by William Wright
builders and will provide 56 self-contained flats
comprising 294 study bedrooms, say chartered
surveyors, Hodgson Elkington, who are agents for
the vendors.
Work is
underway and the fast track project by Nottingham
based contractors, Landmere Developments, will be
completed by August 2001, confirmed Andrew Ballam,
chief executive of Leicester based developers, The
Riverside Group.
"Lincoln
City Council put in a significant amount of time
and effort into the initial stages of this
development and the Economic Development Unit's
high quality, proactive approach allowed the
project to proceed smoothly," said Mr Ballam.
"This
is a major city centre development which has been
prompted by the expansion of the university, and
which will help ease the pressure for student
accommodation in other parts of the city like the
Carholme area," said Stephen Bradford,
partner at Hodgson Elkington.
Architects
for the development are Richard Galey &
Partners of The Old School, Loughborough Road,
Leicester.
"I
am very pleased to see this development proceeding
so well. It is a good example of sustainable
development of a brownfield site and fits in well
with the Council's policy of developing
sustainable non residential sites for student
accommodation," said Councillor Neil Murray,
chairman of Lincoln City Council's Economic
Development.
